Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Wins First Title in Over Two Years
19 of Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hardcourt
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial championship for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open final.
The athlete, a ex- number one, has endured a torrid season, achieving just one match at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.
His inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in particular - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.
Now working with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the last few weeks - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over challenger Corentin Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's maiden trophy since the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt since March of that year.
Success also signifies he has secured 21 victories at twenty-one distinct tournaments.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a tournament with my two daughters simultaneously, so to secure a trophy is especially meaningful," stated world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in dedication of my second daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter Alisa was delivered was for her."
The athlete, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six championship matches, featuring in that event previously this season.
The player's retrieving strategy and frequent emotional displays on court had caused observers to wonder if his ability to perform at the highest level was over.
But the player has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to advance forward and compete assertively, reinforced by an better serve.
The champion recovered from a break down in the opening set against the tricky Frenchman, securing 4 of the concluding five games to take the lead.
The competitors traded breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, attempting for his maiden professional championship, gained dominance to push for a third set.
He rescued four initial chances in a competitive third set before the Russian secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Suitably, Medvedev clinched victory with a point at the net, with Moutet failing to manage a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
